Hey Kids! Join our Summer Reading Club. It's fun and easy. All you have to do is read books (you get to choose!) and tell us about them. Registration opens the week of June 10, 2012 and is open to any child that can read on their own. Younger children who can not yet read and their parents are encouraged to check out our new Read to Me program starting in July.
Summer Reading Club (SRC) is for children who are reading on their own. Children may sign-up when they are in the library anytime beginning June 10th. We give the child a reading record to list the books they have read. Children may read and record as many books as they like.
Each week of the SRC children can come in any time we are open, except the last 15 minutes before closing and talk about no more than one or two books they have read. A staff member or volunteer will be here to listen in the area we decorate to match the SRC theme. This is not a school report, it is a conversation with a caring adult.
Children are encouraged to bring their reading record with them, but may talk about their book without it . The books may be books from the library, home, friend or anywhere. The conversation may be as long or short as the child desires. We will sometimes ask leading questions of reluctant reporters.
After 5 reports, a “Reading Certificate” is awarded to the reader. It is possible to earn a certificate in as little as 3 weeks, but there are 8 weeks in the program, which allows time for children to earn their Reading Certificate even if weeks are missed. Children may continue to do reports after receiving their Reading Certificate, and could report on up to 16 books during the 8 weeks of Summer Reading Club.
We also show a series of movies related to our theme. Please pick up flyers for these programs at our desk.
