Library patrons visiting the Woodmere (Main) Branch of the Traverse Area District Library after September 4 will be greeted by TADL’s friendly staff and a new welcome desk

[The Woodmere library will be closed for the lobby redesign August 26 through September 3. During this brief closure, patrons are reminded that they have access to five other amazing community libraries throughout the district.]

What will the redesigned lobby achieve? The new design will provide:

  • A welcome desk and TADL staff to greet visitors and assist with program and service information.
  • An expanded holds shelf accessible for self-service.
  • Four express checkout units offering fast, convenient, private, and easy checkout, to be located on the reverse of the welcome desk.
Once MeLCat is introduced, the fully accessible holds shelf and express checkout will play a vital role in its success with daily deliveries anticipated to double if not triple due to MeLCat participation.

The lobby redesign is a part of the library’s district-wide 2012 service upgrades. The upgrades include an enhanced online catalog, RFID tagging (did you meet the TADL Tag Team?), and MeLCat in the coming months. With more than 1.2 million lending transactions in the last year, the upgrades to the catalog and circulation systems are exciting and critical to control cost and continually improve the high quality of services the community has come to expect.

  • I am very disappointed that TADL has jumped on the "self service" bandwagon, replacing the friendly and knowledgeable Circulation Librarians with four machines. One can only hope that your self service checkout works more smoothly than the typical grocery store system... - by Jackie Anderson on Wed, 06/27/2012 - 12:01pm
    • On the plus side, kids seem to really get a kick out of checking out their own books. And there should still be a librarian around for answering questions, right? - by Shari Benson on Wed, 06/27/2012 - 2:05pm
    • They have them in most other cities and it works wonders. It frees librarians of menial tasks (taking fine payments and checking stuff out, etc) and leaves them open for things you really need a human for, like helping you find items and what not. (not to mention the privacy thing can be really nice, heh) Reply · Like · 2 seconds ago - by Ian Gibbs on Wed, 07/18/2012 - 2:02pm
  • Thanks for the comments. Yes, of course our librarians will still be around to answer questions. And members from the circulation team will be available at the new welcome desk in the lobby. Please read through the 2012 Service Upgrade information linked above which includes frequently asked questions. Also, stop in and try the express checkout that is now available in the Sight and Sound department...it's smooth! - by Traverse Area District Library on Thu, 06/28/2012 - 10:17am
