2012 Teen Summer Reading Zombie
This year's national theme for Teen Summer Reading was “Own the Night.” The Traverse Area District Library's Main Branch, under the guidance of its teen volunteers, fully embraced the night and all it’s creatures.

Teen Services at Woodmere was decorated with a one of a kind “Own the Night” banner and a life sized paper mache zombie, both created by the teen patrons. The zombie greets patrons as they enter Teen Services, patiently collecting summer reading reports. This year, once again, teens could also submit reading reports online, offering greater reach for teen participation district-wide. With a few more weeks to go, teen summer reading participants have already read more than 500 hours, that is a 100.4% increase over hours read at this time last year. And 14 lucky teens have already won books from the weekly drawings. Anyone having read a whole night (12 non-consecutive hours) will be entered into the final drawing for a telescope.

In addition to reading, reporting number of hours read, reviewing and discussing books (the good and the bad) and winning books, the teen volunteers (AKA, the Teen Sages) organized three related programs. Zombie Apocalypse Survival Planning, which took place in June, offered teens an opportunity to plan for the zombie apocalypse. You never know when it's going to happen, so it's best to be prepared. Using information found in the Zombie Survival Guide to brainstorm ways to save library patrons and what action would be needed to ensure the survival of humanity. It's a big job and the teens are now ready to save us all.

In July, teens chilled with a flix double feature showing Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

On Saturday, August 25 the teen summer reading program will commence with an after hours dance party to celebrate. DJ Manny Stiles will be playing only the best dance music and putting on a light show under the summer night sky in the parking lot of TADL's Woodmere Branch. Food, drinks, and glow bracelets will be available to enjoy. Teens between the ages of 12-17 are welcome to come as they are or dress as a creature of the night! This free dance is being held in conjunction with the teen summer reading program and will include the final prize drawing. All teens are invited to attend, however only those that participated in this year's teen summer reading program will be elegible for the grand prize.
