The Traverse Area District Library is pleased to welcome back local artist and photographer, Tom Haxby to the Woodmere (Main) Branch to display his photography during the month of November.
An opening reception will be held Sunday, November 4 from 1 -3 p.m. in the McGuire Community Room.
Haxby, an outdoor photographer based in Kingsley, Michigan, credits his grandfather for inspiring his interest in photography when he bought Tom his first 35 mm camera which was a Minolta SRT- MC in 1970.
Specializing in landscape and wildlife photography, he takes his inspiration from his 25 years as a professional forester and a passion for the outdoors, aiming to photograph the beauty and majesty of the natural world that surrounds us and to share with others captured moments of nature’s splendor.
While most of his images feature Northern Michigan, his photo expeditions have taken him to Alaska, the Smoky Mountains, Florida, South Carolina, the Southwestern United States and many points in between. His favorite photo location is the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Tom’s work has won numerous awards including Semi-finalist NANPA Showcase Competition, Winner Florida Trail Association photography contest, Winner LIAA Photo Contest, and Best of Show Cadillac Art Fair. His work has been published in numerous publications including Cover of Michigan Blue, Traverse Magazine, Great Lakes Calendars, Michigan 2012 Calendar, Greeting Cards (Leelanau Conservancy, North Country Trail Association), Whisper in the Woods, Barefoot Magazine, and Manitou Magazine.
Tom is a member of the Traverse Area Camera Club and attained level of Master Photographer, North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), Nature Photographer's Network (NPN).
