2000 Director's Report
to the Traverse Area District Library
Board of Trustees

It is with pleasure that I present you with my annual report for 2000. The report consists of this brief narrative, a list of some of the more significant events of the year, collection and use statistics; and, an unaudited financial statement for the Library's General Fund.

Until I started to put together a list of significant events during the last twelve months, I thought "what a slow year". But, having had to edit from this report a number of those events, this really was not such a quiet year. While not at the same hectic pace as last year, growth continues after a year in the new main library.

And we have a lot to look forward to next year.

  1. Finding ways to meet the requirements of the Children Internet Protection Act
  2. Establishing ourselves as the central location for local information
  3. Exploring possible new branch locations
  4. Addressing other strategic planning issues

On a more personal note, I can still remember Saturday mornings 25 years ago when I, along with four or five other people, staffed the entire library (and still had time to take a brief nap). What activity we saw back then in a week or more, we now see in less than a day. There were no computers, compact discs, or many of the other things we now take for granted. It has been an amazing quarter of a century.

Still, our mission remains much as it was then: to inform, enlighten and entertain. Today, we just do it in different ways, do more of it; and, do it better.

Respectfully submitted,

Mike McGuire, Director
