In 1999, the Grand Traverse Area Children's Garden was established on the Boardman Lake side of the Traverse Area District Library, Main Branch with a vision to educate and inspire youth with the knowledge of gardening, nutrition, conservation, and the environment.  Volunteers, led by Susan Kuschell, started the Garden as a sponsored fund of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. Shortly after, the community expressed interest in a place for children to actively engage in gardening, not just to view its beauty.  In 2001, the Learning Garden in Hull Park opened as a place where 45 community volunteers, three intern students on scholarship, and thousands of visitors and residents support gardening each year.
