About the Law Library

The Grand Traverse County Law Library is sponsored by Traverse Area District Library, Grand Traverse Leelanau Antrim Bar Association and the 13th Judicial Circuit Court. The Law Library collection includes up-to-date Michigan cases and statutes, Michigan form books, ICLE practitioner handbooks, legal treatises and magazines and self-help books on a variety of legal topics including divorce and custody. The collection is for reference only, but a copy machine is available for your convenience.

In addition to the print collection, the library also has two public computers that patrons can use for legal research. The library has subscriptions to both Westlaw (Michigan sources only) and Fastcase (both federal and state materials.)

Reference assistance can be provided with finding materials on a specific law-related subject, using legal research materials, finding citations to find specific statutes, case law, and other legal references and locating other agencies available to help with questions about the law. The law library staff cannot, however, give legal advice or state opinions on legal issues; interpret the law, regulations, court cases, or any other legal materials; select specific forms; choose or recommend language for use on any form or other legal document; answer most phone inquiries about the law pursuant to MCL 600.916 (Unauthorized practice of law.)

Michigan Legal Help

The Michigan Legal Help website is funded by the State Bar of Michigan Foundation and the Legal Services Foundation to help people who have to handle simple civil legal problems without a lawyer. There are helpful articles you can read to learn about a specific area of the law and toolkits and checklists to help you prepare to represent yourself in court. Automated forms can be completed when you answer simple questions. If you need more help, you can search for a lawyer or community services in your area.
