Historical fiction at its best.
The Lacemaker follows Gilonne Perdriel from her unusual birth through adulthood.
Beginning with her apprenticeship at age five when she learns to "prick the pattern," the history of lace is interwoven with Gilonne's life as a lacemaker and the history the France of Louis XIV, a time of religious persecution and world exploration. A time and place I knew very little about until reading this book.
Examples of bobbin lace may be found in Dewey 746.222. -- Technique of Bobbin Lace / Pamela Nottingham ; 100 new bobbin lace patterns / Fukuyama Yusai ; Introduction to bobin lace patterns / Bridget M. Cook.
