There is a sign that says “If only life were as simple as Evangelion.” That takes sarcasm to a whole new level.  In Neon Genesis Evangelion half the world’s population was wiped out 15 years prior to the start of the story during the second impact. Something or someone is contriving to set off a third impact. Tokyo 3 is under attack by a large being known as an ‘angel’. The only weapon capable of fighting an ‘angel’ is an Eva, which must be piloted by 14-year-old kids.
