TADL Offers Fine Forgiveness for Library Cardholders this December

December is a season of generosity, goodwill, and sharing. At the Traverse Area District Library (TADL), December is also a time for forgiveness… of overdue fines.

Are your library books, movies, or other materials overdue? Return them during the month of December and fines will be automatically forgiven. Do you have outstanding overdue fines on your account? Drop by any TADL network location to check out materials between December 1 through 31, 2019, and all fines will be forgiven and borrowing privileges restored.

Library Director Michele P. Howard proposed the idea to the TADL Board of Trustees at the November board meeting.

“The holiday season is a busy and expensive time of the year, so this is our way of saying thank you for being our patrons,” said Howard. “We also know some patrons might have a book that was due three years ago, been afraid to return it, and thus no longer use the library.”

TADL Board Treasurer, Jason Gillman supports this effort in order to encourage and restore library use by everyone in the community.

“Traverse Area District Library’s mission to stimulate intellectual curiosity, facilitate lifelong learning, promote literacy, and nurture personal enrichment can only be met by encouraging full participation of the community to enjoy the library’s resources,” said Gillman. “What better time than in the season of giving, could the library offer a one time forgiveness of debt which only keeps some people from utilizing all we have to offer.”

The Fine Forgiveness only applies to overdue fines accrued on a borrower’s account. Any other charges for lost or damaged items, returned check fees, or collection agency fees are the responsibility of the library cardholder.

In addition to Fine Forgiveness, Howard said that TADL is having a contest to see who returns the longest overdue book. The winner will receive a gift card to the bookstore of their choice.
