The Traverse Area District Library is excited to team up with Norte! Youth Cycling to bring the first pedal-powered library to Traverse City.
The “Commuting Library” made its street debut in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Tart Trails Smart Commute Week on Wednesday, June 4 during the Norte! TC Rides event which looped around town, ending at The Little Fleet.
Stocked with bestsellers and a rotating collection of books tailored to the bike’s location, the Commuting Library will also have a mobile WIFI hotspot, provided courtesy of mi spot, which librarians will use with a tablet device to show visitors how to access TADL digital offerings including e-books. Visitors will also be able to check out books and register for library cards at the bike. Locations and events may include downtown, the Open Space, and local parks.
The bike belongs to local residents Laura and Bob Otwell. Ty and Johanna Schmidt, founders of Norte! will be supplying the pedal power along with the Otwells while library staff ride alongside. Special thanks to Image 360 for serving as a media sponsor and providing signage for the Commuting Library. View the Commuting Library Photo Gallery.
