Cinema Curiosa presents: THE CONNECTION
February 3, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm| Main Library (Traverse City)
THE CONNECTION is one of the most vital, fascinating films of the American independent world. Created by director, Shirley Clarke, at a time when women directors were in very short supply, the film shattered stereotypes in just about every conceivable way. And yet, the film remained unseen for many years.
Synopsis: A group of addicts and jazz musicians wax philosophically about life and death while waiting for their dealer to arrive. Film is an open look at the drug subculture and value system from an off-Broadway play by Jack Gelber. Shown out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, it was nominated for the International Film Critic’s award.
“A lean, mean saga of jazz, junk and rebellion.” – Salon
“The quartet of musicians, led by the pianist and composer Freddie Redd and the caustic-toned post-bop saxophonist Jackie McLean, perform brilliantly on-camera as they dramatize both the agonized wait and the needed high.” – New Yorker
“It’s experimental theater meets cinéma verité with a self-aware sensibility: a drama in documentary form.” – Parallax View
Director: Shirley Clarke
