Last Plane Out of Cambodia with Captain Neil Hansen
May 24 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm| Woodmere (Main) Library
Remember the movie “Air America” starring Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. as American pilots flying missions in Laos during the Vietnam War? Come to the library on May 24 to meet Captain Neil Hansen, one of the pilots that flew the CIA’s secret airline… that many Americans never knew existed.
Captain Hansen gives audiences an overview of Air America and will recount implausible and harrowing events during his time in Vietnam and Laos. His captivating presentations bring audiences with him into the cockpit and onto the dirt mountain landing strips of Southeast Asia during a time when flying conditions were risky and avionics technology non-existent or primitive at best.
After nearly a decade with Air America, Captain Hansen went on to fly for Angkor Wat Airlines out of Cambodia. In 1975, mere hours prior to that country falling to the murderous Khmer Rouge, Captain Hansen ended up escaping with his life by stealing a plane and flying his crew to safety in Thailand.
