Join us the second Sunday of the month at 1:00pm at the Main Library in the McGuire Community Room as Classical Interlochen Public Radio and Traverse Area District Library launch a new partnership as part of an initiative to bring more classical music into the local community. Each event will be free, for all ages with a different program offered each month.

This week’s program:  Learn about the Theremin with Classical IPR & TADL!

The Theremin is an electronic musical instrument that the performer plays without touching. Composers have often used it to create spooky or otherworldly sounds, like Miklós Rózsa did in his scores for the films “Spellbound” and “The Lost Weekend.” The Theremin is featured prominently in the music of 1950s science fiction films like “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and “The Thing from Another World.” The Theremin has also appeared in popular music, probably most famously in the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations.” Join Classical IPR at the the Traverse Area District Library to learn more about this fascinating musical instrument and even have the opportunity to try one out.
A screening of the documentary “Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey” will begin at 1 p.m. in the McGuire Room at the Traverse Area District Library’s Woodmere branch. This film is about the invention of the instrument, its role in music in the 20th century and the search for its inventor Leon Theremin after he was imprisoned in a Soviet gulag. There will be a real Theremin on hand before and after the film for attendees to see and hear and even try to play!

Classical IPR presents quality classical music with news updates from National Public Radio and local reports, and also broadcasts outstanding musical performances from Interlochen and around the world. Classical IPR can be heard in more than 20 counties, from well above the Mackinac Bridge south to Big Rapids, and from Michigan’s west coast to Roscommon.
