The goal of the Traverse Area Historical Society is to share local history of Traverse City and the Grand Traverse region.

The October meeting of every year is the TAHS annual meeting. 

The meeting will begin with presentations from three Michigan History Award winning students.  Jack Ducote won national honors by receiving the  Senior Division World War II History Prize for his individual exhibit, Rigorous Debate, Diplomatic Failure, and America's Worst Day: The Road to Pearl Harbor. The award was sponsored by the National World War II Museum. He placed seventh in the nation for the Senior Division Individual Exhibit category. 

Lauren Johnson completed a group exhibit with her peer McKenna Wilcox. They were selected as one of two National Finalists from the State of Michigan for their group exhibit The Divide: Dissent Within the Women's Suffrage Movement that explores the impacts of the debates that divided the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) and American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA).

Dawson Payne was also selected as one of two National Finalists from the State of Michigan for his individual exhibit Expansion vs. Removal, which examines the debate that eventually led to government actions such as the 1836 Indian Removal Act, 1851 Indian Appropriations Act, and 1887 Dawes Act.

Next on the agenda will be our state of the society report on our accomplishments since our last annual meeting.  This will be followed by our annual election of board members. Finally, we will seek membership approval of revisions to our bylaws.  The board is recommending several changes to update the bylaws, not updated since 2017. The primary changes are as follows: 

  • Expanding access to voting members virtually.
  • Updating bylaws to align with current practices and streamline administrative practices
  • Eliminating obsolete articles referring to an unused executive committee and discontinued executive director position
  • Expanding the number of seats on the board to provide greater capacity for more member participation

While only TAHS members may vote in the Board election and on the Bylaw changes, everyone from the public is welcomed to attend the full program.
