Kingsley Branch Library (http://tadl.org/kingsley) - It's Wigglers Storytime! (https://www.tadl.org/event/wigglers-storytime-83) (Don't miss Sept. 26th and 27th, we're doing an extra-special 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Kick-off!) September, Library Card Signup Month, is a great time to consider the privileges included with every library card. Traditionally, the third week of September is also Banned Books Week. While Banned Books Week is officially October 1 - 7 this year I do want to address this topic in the traditional timeframe. Unfortunately, in 2022 the library profession saw a 38% increase in titles attempting to be banned. While attempts to ban books have increased, public sentiment is clearly on the side of the First Amendment and the Freedom to Read. In a recent Michigan EPIC-MRA poll, 83% majority of all respondents statewide would support state legislation that would protect the right of the public to read what they wish to read in local public libraries and not have books banned. In our region, “85% of respondents agreed that a few parents should not be able to decide for all parents and everyone else”. Yet across our region, the State of Michigan, and across the United States, we still see a minority of individuals trying to take away those Constitutionally guaranteed rights from all of us. The TADL Board and staff stand firmly against any attempts of censorship of our collection. We respect a parent's right to choose what is appropriate for their children, but only for their children. No one has the right to tell another person what they can and cannot read. The library is recognized as a community center, a gathering place for people with different ideologies, backgrounds, wealth, education, ethnicity, and lifestyles. It’s one of the few places left where people act kindly to one another because we all have one thing in common: the love of a good story! Even if the stories are worlds apart. "We read to know we are not alone." - C.S. Lewis Additionally, it's vitally important that readers see themselves represented in stories. The power of a story to provide inspiration and hope is incalculable, and we are paying tribute to that this year with our own slogan - A Book Can Save A Life. Staff will have t-shirts and we'll have additional shirts for sale by the front desk. All proceeds from these t-shirts will go toward purchasing additional "own voices" books for the library. Help me celebrate Library Card Sign Up Month and Banned Books week by stopping by the library! We'll have a display of Banned Books posters throughout the years in the McGuire Room for the first two weeks of October. If you’d like to learn more about protecting your right to read in Michigan, go to: https://www.mirighttoread.com/. Keep reading (anything you want)!
