Happy November!

I'm writing this fresh off the Chili Cook Off - how wonderful to see our community enjoying time together on our front lawn. It's even more special to know that donors (and the MEDC) saw the value in coming together and helped us make the front lawn update happen. Still to come - a new drinking fountain! This is the latest in a long line of community-building that started with the Ladies Library Association in 1869. I hope to see you at the celebrations over the coming year as we honor all our community's library-building efforts for the past 155 years.

But, we have to also stop and acknowledge that not everyone feels this amazing sense of community. As the darkness of fall and approaching winter creep in, I am reflecting on a recent U.S. Surgeon General's report (Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation, the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community 2023). Did you know that the health effects of loneliness is on par with smoking 15 cigarettes a day?!

This report details how our American society as a whole has gotten more lonely and isolated. Loneliness crosses all ages, races, genders, incomes, and areas of residence. While we are technologically more connected than anytime in human history, we are also growing more lonely and isolated. While most of us know how loneliness feels emotionally, the report details more invisible, detrimental physical effects including strokes, heart disease, dementia, inflammation, and suicide.

Fortunately we do have a cure: connect with those around you. The plan identifies Six Pillars to tackle loneliness - Pillar 1: Strenghten Social Infrastructure in Local Communities. This includes public libraries (of course)!! We are a pillar of our local communities.

Our Strategic Plan to make the library inclusive to everyone has never been more important. We continue to strive to do more, do better for our community and we hope you’ll join us. Reach out to a friend or family member. Be friendly to a stranger. Attend a program - we offer programming for all ages, join a book club, read or listen to a book, or volunteer!

Our library is better with you in it, we can't wait to see you soon -
Michele
