Embarrassing! Set an example for our kids. Do better for the environment. Thanks. TADL: We appreciate and share your concern for our young people and the environment. However, we do get positive comments about our cheery library decor. Please know that the vast majority (90%+) of our decorations are paper or felt. (Thank you to the volunteers who all made paper decorations for our birthday celebration! The photo above is one example of how we reuse items for events.) We are mindful of our purchases and reuse them many times over. We did make an exception for some balloons, because we felt our milestone birthday deserved a touch of levity. I don’t remember exactly when I learned how to read but I do know that I was bad at it. I was a slow reader and hated reading out loud. It took me a while to get reading but once I really got the hang of it…well you know how that ended. :) Reading comes naturally to so many of us that we forget there are people who can’t read and/or don’t read well. What helped me to “get the hang” of reading? It was having a teacher who allowed the class to read everyday at school. We read silently for 15 minutes. That was all it took to establish my lifelong enjoyment of reading. In March we are starting a campaign to get everyone to read more. It’s called the Ultimate 155 Challenge - read 15.5 minutes a day for 155 days. Why 155? It’s one day for each year our region has enjoyed library services (the Ladies Library Association was founded in 1869). Why 15.5? Studies show that a person must read at least 15 minutes a day to maintain their reading skillset. If you are reading a book, you are not: * Doom scrolling * Listening to commercials * Being tracked by Google * Watching a screen (unless you like digital devices and that’s okay) * Paying for a subscription service More importantly, if you are reading, you are: * Relaxing your mind * Modeling behavior to youngsters * Improving focus and memory * Learning * Stretching your imagination * Improving your sleep Time flies when you’re having fun reading! Join me and let's all maintain our "reading fitness" with our Ultimate 155 Community Read-a-Thon. It's a wonderful way to pay tribute to the Ladies' Library Association, who made our libraries what they are today. And, if you know a reluctant reader - encourage them. Maybe they will read 15 minutes with you and who knows, someday they might even become a library director! It’s a win-win. I hope you’ll join me in this challenge! Michele
