Traverse Area District Library April 2024 Newsletter ** What's new? ------------------------------------------------------------ The calendar says it's spring so we're going with it! Welcome to the 339 cardholders who joined us in March. A few key highlights: 1) Bathroom renovations - The 2nd floor bathrooms and the Youth Services family restroom are in mid-construction as of this writing. Demolition is complete and new materials are going in, we look forward to updated touchless, water-wise bathrooms soon! Crews start very early and do their best to get the noisiest work done before we open. While there will still be some noise and dust please know that everyone is doing their best to complete the project in a timely yet somewhat-quiet fashion. 2) Our bookmark contest! As part of our ongoing heritage celebration we're hosting a bookmark contest. Library patrons of all ages are encouraged to submit a design, winners will be printed and handed out at libraries for the rest of our 2024 heritage year. All details (including an entry form) are online at tadl.org/makeyourmark 3) New "Be Info Savvy" webpage - In response to last month's showing of the documentary Trust Me (available on Kanopy) in conjunction with TCAPS, we've developed a new page with some tools for evaluating information (tadl.org/beinfosavvy) 4) Community Read-a-Thon - Thank you to everyone who has already signed up/started the Read-a-Thon! Beanstack has over 1,100 days of reading logged already and I'm sure those paper logs are showing progress - great job readers! Yard signs will be available starting next Monday. From time to time we will highlight some here and on the display board in our lobby. Have a notary for the working class on weekends! Thank you for the suggestion. In 2022 we more than doubled the number of notaries on staff at Woodmere. (Thank you to the staff members who volunteered for the training and took on the extra tasks.) However, since we are open every day of the week and work multiple shifts to cover the hours we cannot guarantee that a notary will always be in the building. It's best to call ahead to make sure one is available prior to your visit. The UPS Store offers notary services too, as do most banks. Get fainting goats to borrow! We appreciate your innovative approach to library services. We do have one goat in the collection (https://catalog.tadl.org/main/details?id=48475937) (that you can borrow!) who is rumored to be a fainter. ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Around the TADL neighborhood... Howard April is always a fun month for libraries. April 7th-13th is National Library Week! Well-meaning adults often ask me, “Does anyone even come to the library anymore? Isn’t everything on the internet?” I strongly resist rolling my eyes (I’m not always successful) but I say emphatically, “Yes! People come to the library all the time. And No, everything is not on the internet.” Then I like to back it up with some fantastic statistics like over 1,000 people a day visit a library in our district and some days it’s a lot more than that! Last year TADL circulated over 1.3 million items to over 60,000 cardholders. In a recent report by Kathi Berens and Rachel Noorda of Portland State University, Gen Z and Millennials are leading the pack when it comes to using libraries. For example, 54% of Gen Z and Millennials have visited a physical library in the past 12 months. For the generations who grew up with computers, they like to read in print. Here’s another interesting fact: 23% of Gen Z and Millennials who visited a physical library don’t identify as readers! Why do they come to the library? For a free place to hang out, to attend a program, use the WiFi, and share space with others. Even if one has unlimited buying power there is one thing you can get at the library that money can't buy - a sense of belonging within your community. While this exists every day special events like the cookie crawl (pictured above) really shine a warm light on it. Everyone left with a smile feeling as if the day was just a bit more special thanks to their stop at the library. Libraries have always been good stewards of community resources and in turn, our community is a good steward of TADL. It’s pretty amazing to think about those 1.3 million circulated items being used over and over again. Sure some get some wear and tear but overall it’s a resilient and powerful system of sharing. If you celebrate Earth Day on April 22, using your public library is a great way to reduce, reuse and recycle. Reduce consumerism by borrowing from the library. Reuse by checking out a cloth bag and books, movies and more. Recycle by donating your gently used personal books to our Friends of the library book sale. Speaking of events - drop in and chat! I'm hosting Doughnuts with the Director Apr. 11 at 11:30 am in the McGuire Room. If you can't make it, reach out any time, but I will be scheduling more open-house style chat times in the future. I look forward to seeing you soon at the library! Michele PS: We often get asked how children can volunteer - we've come up with an option for you.
