Traverse Area District Library October 2024 Newsletter

What's new?
Happy fall! Welcome to the 261 new cardholders who joined us during Library Card Signup Month :)
CLOSURE Oct. 17! The Michigan Library Association Annual Conference is in Traverse City this year (the last visit was 2010). Please know that the Woodmere library will be CLOSED the day of Thursday October 17 so that staff may attend training. It's a great opportunity since there are no additional travel expenses.
1) Chili Cookoff! We hope that you can join us again this year for our Chili Cookoff on Sun. 10/20. Details below -
2) Write Michigan Short Story Contest - We've partnered with the Kent District Library and other libraries around the state to share this short story contest. It's free for kids and teens to enter, $10 per entry for adults (scholarships available). Details and entry form at writemichigan.org!
3) Hop on the book bus! - We've taken extra measures this year to raise awareness around literacy (our Community Readathon, etc.) but there is still much work to be done. To keep the issue in front of the community over the coming year we're excited to join forces with BATA to unveil a new Book Bus in celebration of October - National Book Month! There will be free books on board as well as codes to promote library services.

From the Director’s Desk with Library Director Michele P. Howard
October is an especially fun month at the library, since it always brings the Chili Cook Off, the staff Pumpkin Contest, and the children’s Halloween Parade. It’s a great way to remember all the special ways a library contributes to the community.
There is also another important day in October Freedom to Read Day on October 19—a day dedicated to celebrating our right to access and read diverse ideas and perspectives freely.

Freedom to Read Day serves as a reminder of the importance of open access to literature and the transformative power of words. Every book represents a voice, a viewpoint, and a unique story that can challenge our thinking and broaden our horizons .Living the life of another through a story is a powerful tool to understanding and empathy. Reading is a critical skill for success in life but empathy for others is key to a successful community.
Get involved with Freedom to Read Day by trying one of the following:
* Read in public! It’s a great way to remind everyone we’re a community of readers.
* Start a Book Club. Gather some friends or family members and pick a book to read together.
* Read a Challenged Book: Choose a book that has faced censorship or challenges. Dive into its pages and reflect on its significance.
* Visit the Library or a Bookstore: Support your community’s access to literature by attending events or simply browsing their collections.
With enthusiasm for the written word,
Michele
