Letter from the Director’s Desk, with Library Director Michele P. Howard
“In prosperity, our friends know us; in adversity, we know our friends." - John Churton Collins
For 43 years, the Friends of TADL, has been a steadfast supporter of the library through prosperity and adversity. If you take a walk around the library, you’ll see where the generosity of the Friends has touched the library: the Youth Story Room, Summer Reading Club, Ancestry online database, the Bookmobile, this newsletter you are reading, and more! Not only do the Friends sustain some items annually, they also do one-time projects (such as the Drop Box at East Bay Branch Library).
Who are these Friends? Like their webpage states, “A friend is someone like you!” Not only does the Main library have a Friends organization but Kingsley Branch, Interlochen Public Library, Peninsula Community library and Fife Lake Public Library all have their own Friends organizations to join. They each offer a little something different but with the same purpose: supporting our libraries!
These organizations always welcome new members and there’s some Friends of TADL events happening at the Main Library on Woodmere Ave. whether you belong or not!
* May 2 - Spring Book Sale- Members Only
* May 3-4 - Spring Book Sale - All welcome. (Volunteers are still needed.)
* May 14 - Annual Meeting, McGuire Room
o Tea with the Director, 4 pm before the Annual Meeting (Drop in for a chat!)
* May 15 - Visit the Friends at the National Writers Series event with Chasten Buttigieg, Opera House
I hope you’ll join us at one of these great events!
IMLS Funding
I’m sure you have lots of questions about federal library/IMLS funding and MeLCat, as we all do. Please know that I am keeping close tabs on the situation. We will post any updates as we have them on the IMLS funding page (tadl.org/IMLSfunding). I will be at the Michigan Library Association Advocacy Day in Lansing April 30, AND as noted above, I will also arrive early at the Friends annual meeting if you would like to drop by for a chat.
Happy Get Caught Reading Month!
Michele
