TC Double Bubble & an ice cream social, 11 am From the Director’s Desk with Library Director Michele P. Howard As of this printing, TADL has been taken over by a colorful palette of activities for Summer Reading Club! We have nearly 3,600 people signed up and over 500,000 minutes read! Wow! And it’s not too late to sign up and help us reach our goal of 2,000,000 minutes! It is truly heartwarming to see everyone pouring into our libraries every day, excited to share our community’s treasure trove of books, movies, music, STEM kits, and more. On the eve of the 4th of July, I have to pause and reflect on all the dangers to our Freedom to Read. I grow tired of reading and writing about censorship and book banning, but as long as our Freedom to Read is threatened it is my obligation to defend it. Libraries of all types are continually threatened by groups that would see our right to read abridged in order to support their own personal ideologies. This is not freedom. I worry that an American's freedom to read will depend on what state they live in. This is not freedom. I fear authors will stop writing books about difficult topics due to a loud backlash by a few. This is not freedom. (Note: Intellectual freedom is a specific right under the First Amendment.) What is freedom? “Let us dare to read, think, speak and write.” John Adams wrote in 1765. This phrase, written 260 years ago, still holds true today.. Let’s celebrate our great country by reading - and perhaps even writing - the stories of all our people! That is what freedom is. See you at the Cherry Festival - come cheer us on in the Thursday night parade!
