Howard Summer isn’t just for sunshine, ice cream, and beach days — it’s also the perfect time to discover new stories, spark your imagination, and keep your brain buzzing all summer long. Summer Reading Club (SRC) sign up opens June 1st (http://tadl.org/summerreading) ! Whether you're 5 or 95, reading during the summer helps you stay sharp, explore exciting new worlds, and even win cool prizes! You track for minutes and you will be entered into prizes. I honestly love this time of year. The library is brimming with activities and people, SRC t-shirts new and old. It is just a blast! Aside from all the events we have, in a recent NPR/Ipsos poll, the majority of Americans enjoy reading and want to read more but don’t. And when it comes to kids, “a whopping 98% of respondents with children in their household want their children to "develop a love of reading." Libraries are here to help foster that love of reading and help prevent the “summer slide”, all while providing educational entertainment! This year’s theme selected by the Collaborative for Summer Library Program, is Color Our World. So, our summer is packed with fun, events, and bookish adventures for all ages - music, painting, drawing, colors, film, photography, and more. IMLS Funding Update There are still a lot of moving pieces but the current status of IMLS funding that goes to the Library of Michigan is still uncertain. (Click to review why this is important to TADL cardholders (http://tadl.org/imlsfunding) .) Currently, the funding has been guaranteed until the end of September 2025. The Library of Michigan also received a letter from IMLS stating that funding returned to the full amount for the 2026 fiscal year. But the current US budget proposal doesn’t show the IMLS nor any funding for IMLS. Additionally, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed suit with other state Attorney Generals to restore funding for the IMLS. On May 6th, the US District Court of Rhode Island temporarily blocked the implementation of the executive order that would dismantle IMLS and 2 other agencies, by granting a preliminary injunction in that case. Enjoy your public library and celebrate your freedom to read. Let’s make this summer a story worth sharing!
