Event Details

Step back in time as the soldiers of the 102nd United States Colored Troops Company C establish an authentic Civil War living history encampment on the front lawn of the library.  Visitors will experience a fully immersive outdoor camp complete with period tents, military equipment, historical displays, and personal impressions of Michigan's African American regiment.

Throughout the day, uniformed historians will offer educational talks about Michigan's Colored Regiment, conduct military drill demonstrations, and present musket firing demos that illustrate the discipline, courage, and daily life of Michigan's black soldiers during the Civil War. Guests of all ages are encouraged to ask questions, handle reproduction artifacts, and engage directly with living historians dedicated to preserving this powerful chapter of Michigan and American history.  The encampment aims to provide both an educational and meaningful experience, honoring the legacy of the men who fought for liberty and equal citizenship.

Hosted by the Gospel Army Black History Group, this nationally recognized program is a family-friendly event that offers a rare opportunity to see history brought vividly to life.
