Celebrate Earth Day with a new tree!

Update Apr. 23: Yes, there are still some trees left! Let's find them great homes -

Do you have a place to plant a tree that needs a lot of moisture? If so, how about a Champion Black Willow?

Where:

  • Main Library Reference Desk, 2nd Floor from noon - 8 pm.
  • Kingsley Branch Library from 11 am - 5 pm

The trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Learn more about Earth Day and the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive!

Earth Day began following the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The first Earth Day in 1970 mobilized millions of Americans from all walks of life to birth the modern environmental movement. Since then, Earth Day has evolved into the largest civic event on Earth, activating billions across 192 countries to safeguard our planet and fight for a brighter future.

Over the years, 100s of millions of trees have been planted.  While this year's Earth Day theme is Planet vs Plastics we have partnered with Archangel Ancient Tree Archive of Copemish, Michigan whose mission is to propagate, archive, and reforest. We (and you!) can help them fulfill their propagation mission by stopping by the Main Library on Woodmere and Kingsley Branch Library to pick up your own FREE champion Black Willow Tree. These trees were cloned by Archangel Ancient Tree Archive from the largest Black Willows that grew at the Grand Traverse Commons in Traverse City. Your donated tree will come with planting instructions to help it survive once you choose the best spot for planting.  Black Willows require a moist environment to thrive, near a stream, pond, wetland area, or anywhere with ample moisture is ideal. Black Willows are also used for phytoremediation and are capable of removing toxic chemicals from soil and water.

Don't have space for a tree? How about some flower and veggie seeds?

Growing a garden this year? Don't forget to pick up some seeds while you are here!  Both libraries have lots of seeds available (for free!) in their Seed Libraries
