Teen Blog 21: Blue Tigers and Other Cool Cats!

Posted on:

This August we made a post about our favorite dogs in books, and we loved it! National Cat Day is on the 29th, so we're celebrating early in this week's blog post.

National Cat Day was created by Colleen Paige in 2005. If that name sounds familiar there's a reason-- she's also the founder of National Dog Day, which we discussed a few posts ago! It was designed to help cats in need and give more awareness to shelter cats so that they can find their fur-ever home.

Since its creation, National Cat Day has saved the lives of over one million of our feline friends. That's a lot of cats!

There are a lot of great cats in books that we'll be talk about soon, but our favorite cat is actually from a movie that's taking the world by storm. He's big, he's blue, he'll fix your flower pots for you... and most importantly, he's a big derp! That's right, we're talking about Derpy from K-Pop Demon Hunters!

We all want a memento of our favorite animated friends, and we have a program coming up where you can make one! Our Flashback Crafts program on Monday the 27th is all about shrinky-dinks in every shape and size. You can make derpy tigers, suspicious magpies, or anything you can imagine, so stop by at 4:00 PM for an afternoon of fun.

Now that we've talked about our favorite cat from the big screen, it's time to see who the best cats in books are. From goofy gingers to beautiful black cats, these are six of our favorite fabulous felines!

These are our best guesses of what our furry friends might look like in real life.

Image of six cats from YA fiction. In order, the cats are Buttercup (Ginger Maine Coon), Tybalt (Black cat), Church (Blue Persian Longhair), Chairman Meow (Black and White Mixed Breed), Oncat (Orange Tabby), and Maci (Calico Cat).

Buttercup (The Hunger Games):

Buttercup is a scruffy Maine Coon who was lovingly rescued and adopted by Primrose Everdeen. This cutie is a great mouser and very protective of his own... unless bribed with beaver fat or other tasty treats. Fun fact: Buttercup is the only cat on this list to have two movie appearances-- he was cast as a black and white cat in the original Hunger Games movie before being recast as a Maine Coon in Catching Fire to better fit his description in the books.

Tybalt (Anna Dressed in Blood):

This Black Cat has an attitude problem, but we still love him! When not in the presence of his favorite human, Tybalt can be a bit judgmental and has a tendency to swipe at people he doesn't like. What makes him unique is his ability to see and hear ghosts, making him the perfect familiar for Wicca (aka witches) like the Lowood family. Talk about being a cool cat!

Church (City of Bones):

One of two cats from City of Bones on this list, Church is an elegant Blue Persian Longhair cat. This flat-faced feline may look like a grump, but don't let that fool you-- he's actually very affectionate towards his favorite human, Jem. Believe it or not, Church is actually immortal, making him by far the oldest cat on this list!

Chairman Meow (City of Bones):

Chairman Meow is an easily spooked fluffball owned by Magnus Bane. This Black and White mixed-breed is easily spooked and very spoiled. He gets daily ear scritches and annual birthday parties like all regal beings like cats deserve. Naturally, Magnus knows Chairman Meow is the best judge of character, so he never dates anyone without his cat's stamp of approval.

Oncat (Shadow and Bone):

Oncat is our second Ginger that we're highlighting and is a scrawny Orange Tabby who loves to follow Harshaw around wherever he goes. She loves to perch on his shoulder or circle his legs, showing off her affectionate side. Oncat is aptly named, with her name literally translating to Cat in the Kaelish language.

Maci (The Cat I Never Named):

This Calico sweetie is a stable and comforting prescence to her family as they go through the Bosnian War and ethnic cleansing of the 90s. Simply called Maci, or Cat in Bosnian, she serves as a ray of hope in dark times and is highly affectionate and loyal to her family. Owned by the author of this memoir Amra Sabic-El-Rayess, Maci is the only one on this to be a real-life cat and went on to have kittens later in life.

Which of these cats was your favorite? From mischievous menaces to friendly fluffballs, we love our four-legged friends! If you have a cat you love, send a picture of them to teens@tadl.org and we'll hang up a picture in the teen section.
