Teen Blog 24: Winter Weather is Snow Much Better!

Posted on:

It's official-- December is here, along with a bunch of sparkling snow perfect for getting us into the holiday spirit! We're dedicating today's Teen Blog to welcoming in winter. Let's start!

As always our favorite way to show off our favorite things are with books, books, and more books. That's why we created not one but two new displays all about winter! Frosty Fantasy books are the star of our seasonal Check Us Out display, with captivating fantasies set in winter wonderlands or give off winter vibes. Or if you're looking for a book to get your heart pumping, we've got those too! Our Winter Sports display includes titles where winter sports like hockey, ice skating, and skiing get all of the attention.

We recommend Shea Ernshaw's Winterwood if you're looking for a great winter fantasy to start off with. If winter sports are more your speed, try Check, Please! for an awesome graphic novel about hockey.

Books aren't all we have to offer (we know, we're just as shocked as you are!) this December. Our monthly craft kit is now out, and we think our teen crafters are going to like this one. These larger than life 3D paper snowflakes are great as winter decorations for your room or as a DIY tree topper for your Christmas tree. Speaking of snowflakes, a common misconception is that Inuits have over 50 words for snow (the actual number is likely much less). But did you know that the Scottish people have over 400 words to describe snow??

A study from the University of Glasgow has made it their goal to compile a comprehensive Scots thesaurus, with over 421 terms to describe snowy weather in the UK.

These are some of our favorites Scottish words for snow!

  • "Snaw": the basic translation of snow
  • "Skelf": a large snowflake
  • "Sneesl": when it begins to rain or snow
  • "Flindrikin": a slight snow shower (like a flurrie)
  • "Snaw-pouther": fine driving snow
  • "Feefle": to swirl, or snow that swirls

We know that in a few months we'll all be wishing the snow would go away, but for now we're glad it's here to stay. Our favorite parts of winter are ice skating, drinking peppermint hot chocolate, and cozying up on the couch with a good book-- what are yours?
